| Plot |
| Tradition dictates that the first born male of the New Zealand Maoris tribes becomes Chief. A young Maori girl, Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes) sets out to challenge this tradition when she reaches her teens. Pai proves to be a popular girl with all of her tribe, that is, apart from her grandfather, the current chief Koro (Rawiri Paratene) who is upset that there is no son to take up the role. It is believed that if this tradition is not followed, then this would anger the ancestors. This all changes when a pod of whales become stranded on the beach. Pai forges a close spiritual bond with the whales and sets out to prove that she is capable and worthy of the role of Chief. |
